Conference

{ what is it?
The 3rd Basque World Conference – From Basque to the World is a strategic international conference to analyse the future of the Basque language, from an academic, social and institutional perspective.
[ aims
The purpose of the Conference is to analyse the main challenges associated with the use of the Basque language and social changes, strengthening it as a people and advancing social cohesion, as well as to review the situation of minority languages in the world, processes of revitalization, transformative projects and pathways, and to share knowledge.
This conference will serve to:
appraise the course of public policy
share lessons learned from transformative projects
incorporate international knowledge
listen to and bring on board community voices
In short, to forge a collective commitment for the future.
] why is this conference needed?
Languages are not just communication tools. Language is what binds a community together, the foundation of a culture and the expression of a shared future.
Over recent decades, the Basque Country has undertaken a major process of linguistic revitalisation. There are now more Basque citizens than ever, and our young people have the highest ever level of linguistic knowledge. Society is rapidly changing, though: globalisation, digitalisation, migratory flows and growing diversity shape our new context.
Within this context, the key challenge facing the Basque language, and the minority languages in general, lies in its use. Hence the need for a collective reflection to think about the future of Basque together with the whole community.
The 3rd Basque World Conference provides a forum for that reflection: to analyse the future of Basque as a driver of the community, and to set a shared course for the coming years.
[ who is it meant for?
All individuals and organisations wishing to influence the future of Basque:
experts in the academic field ]
heads of public authorities ]
social agents ]
company and socio-economic sector delegates ]
education and culture professionals ]
and the whole language community ]
The aim is to help bring all these voices together to establish a shared vision.

Basque
world
conferences
This initiative represents the continuation of previous Basque World Conferences, the key gatherings set up by the Basque community to reflect on our future.
The Euskal Mundu Biltzarrak are large-scale events established by the Basque community for collective reflection as to our future. They have been organised in different historical contexts, while at all times sharing the same goal: to analyse the challenges facing the Basque community and to set a shared course for the future.
- 1st Basque World Conference (1956)
This was organised in exile by the government of José Antonio Agirre. At a time when the Basque community was scattered around the world, the goal of the conference was to keep Basque identity, culture and language alive.
- 2nd Basque World Conference (1987)
Headed by José Antonio Ardanza, as President of the Basque Government, following the restoration of self-government. Within the context of the modernisation of the Basque Country, this conference analysed the economic, social and cultural development of Basque society.
- 3rd Basque World Conference (2027)
Staged at a time of globalisation, digitalisation and social diversity. Against this backdrop, the conference places particular emphasis on the future of Basque as the language binding the community together, and as the basis for a shared future.
The 3rd Basque World conference – From Basque to the Worldthus continues a historical tradition tailored to current challenges: analysing the future of Basque as the driver of the community, and positioning it within a global context.
